From house to museum

IMG_2261Though embracing a local geographical significance, La Maison Gabrielle-Roy is also a literary historical museum of international literary importance. The story recounted by the house and its artefacts collection is that of the author, Gabrielle-Roy, and her family. Though Gabrielle attained international fame, the house did not acquire the same official designation.

The house is administered by a society, organized in 1995 with a vision for purchasing it, restoring it, and opening its doors to the general public. In 1997, the corporation purchased the house with income generated from the rentals of its apartments, but especially, and mainly, by the donations of many benefactors. In addition, the corporation benefits from financial assistance from the three levels of government. At the start of 2001, the second phase of the project is undertaken: the restoration. This process is completed on March 31, 2003 and the house finally greets its first visitors on June 23, 2003.
